Target 400 Program


Conveying knowledge to safeguard crop yields


It is easier for economically successful farmers not to employ children.
It is easier for economically successful farmers to do without child labor. That’s why it is a general goal of many of the programs run by Bayer CropScience to improve the earnings situation of its seed producers on a lasting basis.

The “Target 400” program initiated in 2006 contributes to this goal. The name is based on the ambitious target of increasing the seasonal yield to 400 packs of cotton seed per acre. By way of comparison, the typical yield before the program was launched was between 260 and 300 packs.


Bayer CropScience employees provide the farmers with intensive instruction in good agricultural practice.
In specially developed training courses, the farmers are given extensive know-how on crop cultivation – from preparing the soil to the proper and safe use of suitable crop protection products to key measures following harvesting. In this connection, the farmers also learn how to operate in accordance with good agricultural practice.

More than 5,000 farmers have already completed the “Target 400” program and have been able to improve their productivity by using the knowledge gained. This has resulted in a significant rise in acceptance of the “no child labor” policy, as suppliers can now also manage their agricultural land profitably without using child labor. State-of-the-art crop protection agents are also being used in cotton seed production. What’s more, Target 400 has also proven to be an incentive for farmers to engage in long-term collaboration with Bayer CropScience.
