Baylab plants - das Schülerlabor der Bayer CropScience AG am Standort Monheim.
The Baylab plants is the new student lab of Bayer CropScience in Monheim, Germany.
Pupils in classes 9-13 in all kinds of schools can spend a day in an authentic laboratory-atmosphere and have the chance to learn about natural sciences from a new and exciting perspective. Moreover these young people will have a better awareness and understanding of the challenges facing agriculture in the future.


The Experiments
The participants will extract oil out of canola seedIn this lab the canola oil will be changed into biofuelsHere we analyse canola genes
  • Grind canola seeds
  • Installation of the Soxhlet-apparatus
  • Boiling the solution
  • Extraction of canola oil
  • Define iodine number
  • Heat canola oil together with methanolic potassium hydroxide-solution
  • Separate the oil and water into layers using a separating funnel
  • Wash with citric acid
  • Define saponification number
  • Extract DNA out of canola
  • Reproduce DNA through polymerase chain reaction
  • Define quantity using gel electrophoresis
